Challenge
A seawater intake structure had to supply the cooling water pumps evenly; uneven distribution risks vortices, cavitation and reduced pump reliability.
Approach
A CFD simulation of water flow inside the seawater intake was completed to assess the design by evaluating the water flow distribution uniformity through the screens and pump bays.
Result
The flow field revealed how the incoming stream splits between bays and where recirculation and dead zones form inside the structure.
Client outcome
The design was assessed against uniform-distribution criteria, giving the engineering team a basis to confirm or refine the intake layout.
