Challenge

The outfall of a coastal thermal power plant discharges heated cooling water close to the seawater intake. Without a quantitative study there was no assurance that hot water would not recirculate back into the intake and degrade condenser performance.

Approach

CFD modeling and simulation of the surrounding sea domain were conducted to analyse thermal dispersion around the plant outfall and intake, using temperature contour slices at sea depth -7 m, an outfall normal-direction slice and an intake y-direction slice.

Result

The temperature field showed how the thermal plume spreads and decays between outfall and intake, allowing the outfall and intake configuration to be evaluated against the permitted temperature rise.

Client outcome

The study confirmed the intake is safe from hot-water recirculation coming from the outfall, supporting the selected layout with defensible engineering evidence.
